Marc Marquez has ended the first day of MotoGP action at Mugello atop the timesheets after intermittent drizzle consigned most riders to the pit lane during FP2.

Descending dark clouds eventually cracked during the closing stages of the second Moto3 practice session of the day, prompting the majority of MotoGP riders to exercise caution with an afternoon spent in the garages.

Indeed, though the rain would only become harder in the final minutes and the circuit wasn't particularly wet, only Drive M7 Aspar riders Nicky Hayden and Hiroshi Aoyama, Michele Pirro and Alvaro Bautista would brave it out to record lap times, albeit more than 17secs off the dry pace.

In the end, Ducati test rider Pirro would set the fastest time, ahead of Hayden, Bautista and Aoyama, but with better conditions forecast for the crucial FP3 practice session, FP2 is likely to bear minimal significance.

As such, the order from FP1 remains the same on the combined Friday timesheets, with Marquez leading Valentino Rossi, Andrea Iannone, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo.
