MotoGP champion Marc Marquez extended his unbeaten 2014 pole run to six at Mugello, in Italy on Saturday.

The Repsol Honda star, who has also won all five of this year's races, was fastest from his first flying lap. The 21-year-old then improved to set what would be his pole lap next time around, before pitting for a new rear tyre.

Pramac's Andrea Iannone gave Ducati a welcome home front row with second place, 0.180s from Marquez, after making good use of the special soft rear tyre and a slipstream behind Valentino Rossi and later Jorge Lorenzo.

Winner at Mugello for the last three years, Lorenzo will complete Sunday's front row, but Movistar Yamaha team-mate and home legend Rossi managed only tenth place - despite a lap time 0.521s behind Marquez.

It was a major disappointment for Rossi, who had been fourth and 0.186s from the top during final practice, although The Doctor can at least draw consolation from what looks like a strong race pace.

Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa also looked to be trouble, sitting one place behind Rossi as the chequered flag was raised. Fastest in both of Saturday's practice sessions, Pedrosa saved his session by leaping up the order to fourth (+0.314s) on his final lap.

Joining Pedrosa on row two will be Pol Espargaro and Cal Crutchlow. Rookie Espargaro was denied a second run by a fast lowside fall from his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike on his out-lap following a tyre change, while Crutchlow (+0.389s) achieved his best starting position as a Ducati rider.

Espargaro's team-mate Bradley Smith, Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl were all within 0.5s of Marquez but left to fill row three on the grid.

Behind Rossi were Gresini Honda's Alvaro Bautista and Forward Yamaha's Aleix Espargaro, both of whom reached Qualifying 2 after leading the Qualifying 1 session. Espargaro was 0.948s from Marquez.

Marquez holds a 42 point title lead over Pedrosa heading into Sunday's race, at a venue where he suffered his only race fall of last season.
