Dani Pedrosa has broken team-mate Marc Marquez's perfect 2014 pole run, during qualifying for their home Catalunya MotoGP.
Pedrosa had taken pole from Marquez a few minutes before the reigning world champion suffered his first fall of the season, when the front end of his Repsol Honda folded at turn one, sending Marquez sliding into the gravel.
Marquez later explained apologised to his team, saying he had made a mistake in trying to turn into the corner despite braking too late.
The incident confirmed Pedrosa on pole for the first time since last year's Catalunya round, while defending winner Jorge Lorenzo split the RC213V riders with second place (+0.115s) for Movistar Yamaha.
LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl continued his promising weekend with fourth, with Valentino Rossi pulling off a late lap to rise from tenth to fifth place, achieving his goal of a strong starting position.
Forward Yamaha's Aleix Espargaro will complete the second row, with top Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso (0.352s from pole), Tech 3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith and Pramac Ducati's Yonny Hernandez forming row three.
Row four will consist of Pol Espargaro (Tech 3), Andrea Iannone (Pramac) and Alvaro Bautista.
Bautista was thrown into a big highside early in the session and was carried away on a stretcher. The home Gresini Honda rider returned to the track.
Bautista and Iannone reached the session through Qualifying 1, with Ducati's Cal Crutchlow the big name not to progress to Qualifying 2.
The Englishman will start 13th, just ahead of countryman Scott Redding, who was the leading Production Honda rider.
