Catalunya MotoGP: Thrilled Pedrosa halts Marquez pole run

Dani Pedrosa capitalises on a rare mistake by his Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez to grab pole position for the Catalunyna MotoGP
Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa halted team-mate Marc Marquez's incredible run of pole position starts by taking the top spot in qualifying for the Catalunya MotoGP.

Pedrosa capitalised when Marquez slipped off on his final qualifying run to claim his maiden pole of the season with a time of 1m 40.985s, putting him 0.115s ahead of Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.

Marquez's best lap of 1m 41.135s, which gave him provisional pole on his first run, was still good enough for third place on the grid.

A delighted Pedrosa, who seems to have fully recovered from surgery to correct and arm-pump problem, last qualified on pole at Catalunya last season and is now aiming for a dream result on his home patch in Sunday's 25-lap race.

“I am very happy to have taken pole position today, in front of my family and the home fans,” said Pedrosa.

“I was really trying to do the best I could and this time I really pushed. I knew after my first time that I was close to the front row, but then on the second one I tried again.

“I am also delighted that, for the first time this year, I felt good on the bike in qualifying. I'll try and get a good start from pole position tomorrow; I am sure that it will be very hot and we will have to manage the tyres well during the race, but we will try to do as well as possible."

Pedrosa is optimistic he can challenge at the front in what he admits is a 'special' race.

“Last year we were fighting at the front and it might be similar again, I don't know. We will have to wait and see but there are three Spanish riders on the front row for the home Grand Prix so it's special and it's a really important race," he said.

“The track gets so hot around midday and then, like last year more or less, the grip is less, so we are trying to decide on our tyres. I will try to start good and try to do a good opening lap.

“I wasn't really feeling too good in the first two races after surgery, but now it is a little better and I can ride more normal."

Pedrosa's time, set on lap five of seven, was only 0.092s off his pole record from 2013 of 1m 40.893s.

@raceroad People say all the time dani has done nothing. All his wins, poles, fastest laps, etc, has him in the top ten riders of all time. He just hasnt put together a championship season. So all the haters saying he isnt any good are simply new to the sport or misinformed...

Nonesense! Pedrosa knocked Marq off the top of the timing charts and forced him to do a second run. He fell off trying to beat Dani's time. He got beat, suck it up naysayers! If Rossi gor pole we would never hear the end of it. Hail the new messiah!! etc. etc.
