Assen MotoGP: Crutchlow 'If we can alter my bike we’ll get results'
“I believe that if soon we can alter my bike to the way that I want it, we will be able to get the results as well” – Cal Crutchlow.
Cal Crutchlow congratulated Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso on his second podium of the season at Assen, but believes he will need machine alternations to achieve similar results.
Having qualified a season-best fifth in a rain-interrupted qualifying, Crutchlow kept that position as the change from wet to dry bikes was made on lap six of the race. However the Englishman then lost ground to cross the line in ninth, seeing the chequered flag for the first time since Le Mans on May 18.
“I'm going to have a big celebration tonight because we haven't finished in over a month!” smiled Crutchlow. “Seriously, I think we needed to finish the race no matter what happened. We beat some of the guys that I didn't think at the start of the weekend we could beat.
“We never had the pace in the wet or the dry, but I was happy to even be involved a little bit in some battles.
“I had a really strange feeling with the wet rear tyre so I couldn't take advantage at the start and go with Andrea and Marc, which I felt we could have if we had some more rear grip.
“I think it was the setting of the bike, we'd only done two or three wet laps at a test in Jerez and didn't have a base setting for me to go off as such. I had good confidence in the front in the rain, but no rear grip at all. I think the rear was a bit too high.
“When we changed to the dry [bike] and I felt the pace was not too bad, but in the end the bike was understeering way too much. We were unable to be competitive and finished where we finished.”
On Friday, Crutchlow stated that his priority was to learn something that will help improve the performance of the Desmosedici, regardless of his finishing position in the race.
So had he been able to learn anything today?
“I learned that the problems were still there in the race and it doesn't matter how you ride the bike. My position on the bike is wrong. I've said it over and over again, but there's nothing we can do,” said Crutchlow. “I can't ask them to come up with what we want on our side of the garage to change my position on the bike. You can't do it and that's that.
“We have more understeer than the other guys and we ride the bike in another way to the other guys. It doesn't matter how you alter the line or if you do the same line as them, it doesn't make a difference. We still have more understeer and less lean angle [see Thursday's story] and as the race goes on and the tyre gets more worn, it gets worse and worse.
“Last year [at Tech 3 Yamaha] it seemed that as the race went on I got faster and faster.
“We are not fast enough that is for sure. We need to be fast with the same tyres as the Factory [Honda and Yamaha] guys as well. Not just use the soft tyre. Today I used the soft tyre, which I was reluctant to do.
“We have to go into the next race optimistic. I think the team did a fantastic job with Andrea getting on the podium. They thoroughly deserved it. It shows that for Andrea they are going in the right direction, with him and with the way that he rides the bike, and they got thoroughly rewarded for it.
“I believe that if soon we can alter my bike to the way that I want it, we will be able to get the results as well.”
Crutchlow wouldn't be drawn on the exact nature of the body position change he is seeking: “I'm not willing to say... everyone will know my secrets!”
