Aleix Espargaro converted his debut MotoGP pole position into a podium battle with Dani Pedrosa in Saturday's wet-dry Dutch TT at Assen.

The Open class Forward Yamaha rider was holding third as the bike swaps began, remaining ahead of Pedrosa as the pair emerged from the pits on slicks.

Espargaro then re-passed the Repsol Honda rider several times over the next ten laps before finally being forced to surrender the podium place. Nevertheless, fourth equals Espargaro's best ever MotoGP result.

"It was a great race and the battle with Dani Pedrosa on a factory Honda was hard but it was good fun," said the Spaniard. "On the wet I was cautious so I lost the contact with Andrea [Dovizioso], but with the dry set up I pushed hard to fight for the podium.

"We had a very good battle with Dani: he was overtaking me on the straight and I passed him in the corners. It's a pity, but I'm happy with this result. We gained important points for the championship and now we are sixth.

"We leave Assen happy with the results and we will return stronger in Sachsenring."

He got super lucky during qualifying, like factory Honda, and the conditions were favourable on the soft compound, still he should by now have convinced everone he deserves a factory ride. He made Pedrosa look like a rookie who only benefited from his straightline speed.

You can trust this guy to give all he's got and he never makes a mistake...admirable!
