MotoGP riders Bradley Smith, Stefan Bradl and Andrea Iannone tried out a revised layout for the Sachsenring's 'Waterfall' corner on Thursday (see pictures below).

Speaking afterwards, Dorna's Javier Alonso said that the test was not a success.

"The lean angle increases with this change so it's not worth making the change to the corner," Alonso told the official MotoGP website.

"The biggest problem also is that we were supposed to get a different type of tyre from Bridgestone, an asymmetric front tyre, but unfortunately due to a freight problem it will not be here. So we cannot understand if this tyre would make it better.

"We will continue to think because this corner gives a lot of crashes and injuries."

One of the most challenging corners in MotoGP, the fast right-hander is preceded by a series of left hand turns, causing the right side of the tyres to cool down before they are needed most.

Scene of many big accidents, the corner is also off camber and at the crest of a steep downhill plunge, hence the 'Waterfall' nickname.

"The corner is so nice," explained MotoGP champion Marc Marquez. "The problem is that there are so many left hander corners before it. It is fast with 50 percent gas and not full banking so when the front slides it is hard to save."

The turn catches riders out every year - Andrea Dovizioso, Andrea Iannone, Cal Crutchlow, Hector Barbera and Michael Laverty being among the 2013 victims - but opinions have been divided as to a solution.

Valentino Rossi has previously said an asymmetric front tyre would be a 'logical' fix - asymmetric compound tyres are already used for the rear - while others believe the number of big accidents means the turn should be re-designed.

It is with that in mind that the temporary kerbing, placed at the inside of the turn to sharpen the angle of the corner, was first tested during the winter at the hands of MotoGP Safety Officer Loris Capirossi.

However Thursday was the first time it had been tested with MotoGP machinery. Regardless of feedback, any track changes will not take place before next year's MotoGP event, which gets underway tomorrow.
