Forward Yamaha's Aleix Espargaro knocked Marc Marquez off the top of the German MotoGP timesheets following a late Friday afternoon charge at the Sachsenring, thus repeating his FP1 performance.

Espargaro slotted in the soft rear Open class Bridgestone and clocked a time of 1m 22.041s to shunt Repsol Honda star Marquez down to second by 0.117s, who led the way for most of the 45-minute session at the German MotoGP.

Marquez had suffered a huge high-side in the morning before setting the sixth fastest time in FP1, but the defending world champion - seeking an astonishing ninth straight win this weekend - was quickly on the pace in FP2.

Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo finished the day in third on the YZR M1, 0.327s off the top spot, with LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl, Alvaro Bautista (Gresini Honda) and Pramac Ducati's Andrea Iannone the top six.

Dani Pedrosa - who has signed a new contract with Honda until 2016 - came off at the fast, downhill T12 after losing the front end but was soon up on his feet. Pedrosa had been holding third place at one point in FP2 but eventually dropped down the order to complete the session in ninth, one place ahead of Valentino Rossi.

However, only 0.578s separates the top ten, raising the prospect for some close racing at the technical German circuit on Sunday.

Northern Ireland's Michael Laverty put in a stunning lap on the PBM machine to briefly inherit 10th position.

Laverty, though, was quickly brought back down to earth with a spill at T12, where Pedrosa had lost the front end of his Honda earlier in the 45-mission session.

The Ulsterman was bumped down the times to 14th place by the end of FP2, but his time was an impressive 0.887s off Espargaro's best lap as he slotted in behind Ducati's Cal Crutchlow.

With 20 minutes to go most of the riders had pulled into the pits as some spots of rain began to fall, but the threat soon passed and the action resumed in earnest.

Pol Espargaro finished seventh on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 machine but only 0.007s ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati).

Britain's Bradley Smith - who fell twice in FP1 - was 11th ahead of Yonny Hernandez (Pramac Ducati), with Scott Redding the top Open class Honda in 15th place.
