Michael Laverty has enjoyed the most competitive weekend of his season at the Sachsenring and the Irishman is confident of being able to fight with the Open Hondas during tomorrow's Germany MotoGP.

The PBM rider qualified 18th but was within five tenths of the leading Hondas of Nicky Hayden and Scott Redding during the QP1 sessions. Having ran in the top ten during FP2 Laverty was pleased with qualifying but felt that he was unable to get the most out of his bike over a single lap:

"I'm happy enough with today but I wanted a little bit more laptime because I only found a tenth over yesterday," admitted Laverty. "It seemed that I can maintain the pace on the used tyre really well. On a fresh tyre though it doesn't seem to give me a lot of speed.

"Nicky did a 22.3 but he had the same time as me in the first and last sectors but in the middle two, with a lot of edge of the tyre stuff, he could find a couple of tenths. I can't seem to do that with the new tyre and I seem to spin the tyre the same amount if it's new or ten laps old. The bike is working quite good and I've got good pace and for sure I can battle with the customer Honda bikes tomorrow "

Laverty will try and make some improvements in the morning warmup to the bike but these are likely to be limited to small adjustments to the rear linkage. Having had some strong and consistent races throughout the season Laverty is confident that he has the potential during tomorrow's 30 lap race to battle with the likes of Hayden:

"I'm happy with qualifying but I'm really happy with my race pace and realistically we can battle for points. This is the first time all year that I feel that I've got the same pace as Nicky and Hiro and maybe even Scott so if I don't lose too much time at the start I can be right there at the end of the race.

"I've been consistently the top CRT rider this weekend, by quite a bit, so I'm confident that they won't be an issue tomorrow so it's about chasing down the guys in front. I've out qualified Colin so hopefully I'll stay ahead of him because he can be hard to pass but if I stay ahead of him and the CRT bikes at the start hopefully I can stick with Abraham and Aoyama at the start and fight with them to the end."
