Andrea Dovizioso credited world champion Marc Marquez's 'crazy' lines as he was towed to second on the grid in qualifying for the Indianapolis MotoGP.

Dovizioso also has a more powerful Ducati engine this weekend and put it to good use by setting the highest top speed of the session as he broke the timing beam 0.225s behind Marquez's Honda.

The result marked Dovizioso's best ever qualifying performance at Ducati, behind only his single pole at Repsol Honda in 2010.

"But every session we were really strong, almost always in the top five and I feel better than at the other tracks. We are faster, but especially with the new tyres. We have to see in the race if we are able to keep a good speed for the 27 laps.

"For us the tyre choice is easy because our hard tyre [the medium compound] is maybe too soft, so we have to use the harder tyre. Also the potential of the soft and [medium] tyres is very close at this track, so there is no positive point to use the soft."

The Italian, who took his first Ducati podium at the earlier US round in Austin, added: "This is not one of my favourite tracks but now with the changes it is really nice and more natural."

Team-mate Cal Crutchlow will start from twelfth place.

"We've obviously been having a difficult weekend again, but at least I made it into Q2. I think we made quite a big improvement today and as a result I'm more optimistic after today's performance than what I was yesterday."
