Marc Marquez led a top three covered by 0.052s during opening practice for the Czech Republic MotoGP at Brno.

Making use of set-up time from a private Repsol Honda test during the summer break, Marquez was fastest for much of the session.

The reigning world champion, who will set a new all-time record if he can extend his perfect season to eleven wins on Sunday, then shaved 0.004s off his best time on his final lap of the morning after a tow from Bradley Smith.

That time, of 1m 56.803s is within 0.7s of Marquez's own race lap record but only 0.037s clear of Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenzo was the only rider other than Marquez to lead after the twelfth of the 45-minute session.

After a poor Indianapolis weekend, Dani Pedrosa was back on form to complete this morning's top three, just 0.052s from Marquez.

Top Open class rider Aleix Espargaro (Forward Yamaha) was only 0.199s adrift in fourth but used the soft rear tyre to post his best time. Lorenzo's team-mate Valentino Rossi and LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl rounded out a top six all within 0.281s of Marquez.

Andrea Dovizioso led the Ducati challenge in seventh (+0.366s) with Pramac's Yonny Hernandez an impressive 0.387s from the front on the 2013 Desmosedici. A near half-second gap followed to Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rookie Pol Espargaro, whose newly re-signed team-mate Smith filled the final top ten place.

Top Open Honda rider Scott Redding split the Factory class Ducatis of Andrea Iannone and Cal Crutchlow. Redding is expected to replace Gresini team-mate Alvaro Bautista on the RC213V next year and Bautista's barren run continued with 15th this morning.

Alex de Angelis is replacing the 'retired' Coin Edwards for the remainder of the season - Edwards hopes for a few wild-cards - and completed his first MotoGP laps since a stand-in ride for Pramac Ducati at Laguna Seca last year.

The Sammarinese finished the session 19th out of the 24 riders, 3.156s from Marquez.

After a highly impressive debut for the Aspar team at Indianapolis - ultimately unrewarded due to technical problems in the race - Leon Camier began his second MotoGP weekend with 22nd place (+3.642s). Camier is replacing the injured Nicky Hayden on the RCV1000R.
