MotoGP Brno: Marquez denies Ducati tow a tactic

"If Dani, Valentino or Jorge were behind me I would close [the throttle]. But if it is another rider for me it doesn't matter" - Marc Marquez.
MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has denied trying to help the Ducati riders get ahead of his main rivals in qualifying.

Unbeaten in all ten races this season and denied pole just twice, Marquez towed the Factory Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso to second on the grid last weekend at Indianapolis.

Pramac's Andrea Iannone then shadowed the Repsol Honda rider to briefly take pole at Brno on Saturday, on his way to third behind Marquez and Dovizioso.

Valentino Rossi believes it is more than just a coincidence and that the 'clever' Marquez is using the Ducatis to his advantage.

Marquez admitted he would have backed off if Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo or Rossi were following him, but the Repsol Honda rider rejected the suggestion it is a deliberate tactic.

“No [it is not on purpose], but the problem is that it is impossible to care about everybody and in the end you need to do your qualifying,” Marquez said. “You just try to control the main opponents - Dani, Jorge and Valentino.

“The rest, of course this is motorcycling. It has always been like that and always will. Everybody likes to find a slipstream and the best slipstream is from the fastest riders. So for me it is normal.

“Sometimes in Moto3 or Moto2 it happens too much, but in MotoGP there are not too many riders and it is normal that people want to follow you. Then it is your decision if you close the gas or not.

"Of course if Dani, Valentino or Jorge were behind me I would close [the throttle]. But if it is another rider for me it doesn't matter.”

Speaking specifically about the Iannone tow, Marquez added: “I made a mistake and ran wide at the last corner, then I heard Iannone's bike and I thought 'f**k, he will get the pole!'

“So I pushed one more lap because I knew that he had gone faster than me. Because at the beginning of the lap I couldn't hear his engine, but at that the end of the lap he was there [closer].”

Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Rossi will start fifth, sixth and seventh on the grid - but were all within 0.236s of pole.

It'd actually be pretty smart of him if he did tbh. I wouldn't think anything less of him for that. It just makes him a scarier prospect. Blindingly quick, fearless and smart to boot.

Its not on porpose, but one rider like Marquez knows very well the potencial of Ducati in qualify and he knows that is better for him to have the 2 Ducati riders on the top places to upset there rivals pace, because we allready know what happen with Rossi in indianapolis when Dovi was still riding well the Ducati but then he dont have the pace... To be honest aim tyred of this sht, aim tired of waching this punks caching sleep streams and only because of that they manage great times and its all smilles and GG to them.. *** that!! Its asking to much for the Top Motorcycle competiticion to wach out for this sht, Why they dont use Qualify like it was in Wsbk, One Flying lap for each rider and thats It job done.. I really dont like to wach thinghs this way... In Wsbk was great to wach the mIx of pressure and expectacion waching one rider riding hard and knowing that the World was waching every move he was making to get one Pole pocition...
