MotoGP Silverstone: Michael Laverty primed for BSB return

MotoGP rider Michael Laverty believes he will be competing in the British Superbike Championship in 2015... but not necessarily with PBM.
Michael Laverty says it is likely he will be returning to the MCE British Superbike Championship in 2015, but says he has received offers beyond Paul Bird's anticipated 'two team' approach.

A seven-time race winner at BSB level, Laverty stepped up to the MotoGP World Championship as part of Paul Bird Motorsport's CRT endeavour, but with the British team exiting the series at the end of 2014, the Ulsterman is considering his future.

Indeed, he predicts he will be competing in BSB once more next season, but while he has received an offer from Paul Bird to compete with one of his potential two teams in 2015, he says he has been approached by other front-running manufacturers too.

“I think I will be back on a Superbike,” he told “I've had quite a lot of interest from the top teams in BSB. I'd love to be in GP because I think I have learned a lot in the last couple of years but actually getting one of the remaining rides would be difficult unless I had a sponsor to grease the palms a little bit!

"When Paul told us he was stopping GP, he immediately offered a spot for myself and Broc [Parkes] in BSB, so that was really nice to offer security.

“If I am back on a Superbike in WSBK or BSB on something competitive and racing for wins again, I'll be happy. I know if I go back with one of the teams that have shown interest then it'll be a top team so I can go back and win races.”

Indeed, Laverty believes the experience garnered through competing in MotoGP will stand him in better stead should he return to BSB competition.

“I think I am a more accomplished rider and more rounded than when I left BSB and back then I was fast enough to win, so hopefully I can be competitive to win a British title or two. If that happens then brilliant, at the moment it is unsure but I think that is where I'll end up.”

Laverty reached the BSB Title Showdown in 2010, 2011 and 2012, finishing fourth, fourth and fifth overall respectively having competed on Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda machinery.

Paul Bird has indicated a desire to enter two BSB teams in 2015, in addition to his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki outfit. Interestingly, PBM's second entry is likely to be an association with an alternative manufacturer.
