MotoGP Silverstone: Rossi: Saturday morning will be crucial

Movistar Yamaha's Valentino Rossi is keeping his fingers crossed for favourable weather at Silverstone on Saturday after struggling to 13th place on the time sheets
Valentino Rossi says Saturday morning will be 'crucial' as the Movistar Yamaha rider attempts to climb the order after finishing 13th fastest in the opening free practice sessions at Silverstone.

Rossi's best time of 2m 03.952s was 1.826s down on pacesetter Marc Marquez and the Italian rider admitted that day one of the British MotoGP was a struggle.

“Today was a very difficult day because we expected to be faster and more competitive but we are struggling a lot,” said Rossi.

“Tomorrow morning will be important for us and first of all we hope for good weather because I am not in the top 10 and it will be important to go through to Q2. It will be crucial to try and arrive more at the front.

“This morning in first practice was not fantastic but also not so bad, I was not so far from the other guys but I didn't like the feeling in the bike on the front.

“So, for the afternoon we worked a lot on the setting on the weight distribution to help on the corners but unfortunately it looks like we took the wrong direction,” he added.

“I didn't have a good feeling with the bike, especially because when we entered the corner I don't have a feeling with the front and also I have a vibration and not enough grip. I lose a lot of corner speed on entry and I was quite slow.

“We will continue to modify the bike in another way and we will take some data for tomorrow to try something completely different to understand if we can go faster because unfortunately the time was not enough.”

Rossi is also wary of the threat posed by the Open class riders at Silverstone, who may be able to make the softer tyre work to their advantage over the race distance on Sunday.

“[Marc] Marquez today was impressive and was the fastest guy, also [Stefan] Bradl was not so bad and after there is quite a big step between these two and the other factory riders,” he said.

“The Ducatis and also Scott Redding are faster because they have a good advantage with the softer tyre and it looks like they can use this tyre for the race.

“At the end, Bradley Smith did a good lap time with the softer tyre and we hope for tomorrow to make a better time.”

@ Paul, Only top 10 go through automatically so Jlo is also in strife but rates no mention in your post? Is that because you don't expect anything from Jlo? Is that because Jlo wouldn't be embarrassed? Or is it because you are simply slagging off for no good reason? Sorry, my mistake, this is a rossi thread. I will go look for your same post on Jlo's thread....
