Andrea Dovizioso clocked the third fastest time during free practice for the British MotoGP at Silverstone without using the soft Open class rear tyre.
The Ducati star impressed with a time of 2m 03.011s to slot in behind Honda riders Marc Marquez and Stefan Bradl after an impressive start to the weekend.
“I am pleased with the time that I set and also with my pace on the medium tyre. For sure we have to improve even more because it's difficult to obtain a good set-up due to the track surface, which is very bumpy,” said Dovizioso.
“However we have been constantly quick since the start of the morning session and this means that we have started the weekend well.
“My third place is of course a good result, but I think I could have done even better with the soft tyre, which in my opinion is potentially better than the medium one I used to set my time.”
Dovizioso said he was quickly up to speed at Silverstone, enabling him to record a fast time, although the Italian rider was troubled by fading grip levels after a few laps.
“I'm happy about our speed and I have a good feeling on the bike and I'm able to push from the beginning,” he said.
“It's difficult because it's windy and it's difficult to get heat in the tyre. After a few laps the tyre drops a lot, but this is the same for everybody.
“It's very bumpy but the start is very positive. I still believe I'm riding in a bad way and still the limit of the turning is the same.
"We are better everywhere now with this bike but I'm still not able to make the line I want.”
