Marc Marquez kept his place at the head of the timesheets during Saturday morning practice for the British MotoGP at Silverstone.

However the reigning world champion suffered a fall from his Repsol Honda while six riders finished the session within half a second of Marquez, who had held a 0.509s buffer over the rest of the field on Friday.

Marquez's fall, a lowside as he turned into a slow left-hander, occurred shortly after he had set the quickest lap of the weekend so far, a 2m 1.906s, just under the official record. The Spaniard was typically untroubled by the spill and returned to set a 2m 2.022s.

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso went one place better than a pair of thirds on Friday to finish just 0.034s from Marquez, albeit with his best lap on the soft rear tyre.

Behind Dovizioso were four riders who made big progress relative to their day one positions.

Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa jumped from ninth to third (+0.210s), Valentino Rossi from 13th to fourth (+0.337s), Movistar Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo from eleventh to fifth (+0.453s) and Tech 3 Yamaha's Pol Espargaro from twelfth to sixth (+0.462s).

Those losing ground included Friday's runner-up Stefan Bradl plus home stars Bradley Smith and Scott Redding.

Bradl fell from his LCR Honda late in the session on the way to seventh, Tech 3 rider Smith dropped from fourth to eighth, with Open class Gresini rider Redding - riding in a special livery - slipping from sixth to 13th.

That means that Redding missed out on direct access to this afternoon's Qualifying 2 session, where he will join the likes of team-mate Alvaro Bautista, Ducati's Cal Crutchlow and Pramac's Yonny Hernandez in battling for a top two place in the Q1 session.

FP3 was cool, windy and overcast, but dry throughout.
