Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso produced a stunning performance to set the second fastest time for the British MotoGP behind Marc Marquez.
Dovizioso's fastest lap of 2m 01.140s was three tenths of a second slower than the Repsol Honda stars pole time, but the Italian managed to edge out Jorge Lorenzo for second place on the grid as he continues to make progress with the Desmosedici.
“Another great qualifying and I am really happy about that,” said Dovizioso. “I think we are closer to the fastest riders for the race and we have the chance to fight a little bit.
“We have to see what the weather is tomorrow but to start on the front row is always important.”
Dovizioso admitted he was surprised by his overall pace during final qualifying, but nonetheless he is under no illusions that his job will be much more difficult during Sunday's race.
“We have made improvements with our qualifying situation and our pace in the race, but it is really difficult to be consistent throughout the race because of the drop of the tyre,” said Dovizioso.
“We are quite fast, but I have to use the energy and it is not the best way to ride a bike; at this moment it is the only way to be as close to them, so we are still working on that.
“It was a little surprise to be as fast today, especially on the used tyre because I was a second faster. We know tomorrow will be difficult to keep that pace but we have a better situation than the last race.”
