MotoGP Silverstone: Lorenzo 'didn't expect' front row start

Jorge Lorenzo exceeded his own expectations as the Movistar Yamaha rider qualified third fastest for the British MotoGP at Silverstone
Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo didn't expect to secure a front row start for the British MotoGP after struggling for pace at Silverstone.

The two-time premier class world champion claimed the final position on row one with a best time of 2m 01.175s after 'pushing to the limit' of his YZR-M1.

Lorenzo made gains with the soft front tyre but is keen to make improvements on the harder compound during morning warm-up.

“I'm very satisfied and very proud of my lap time. I pushed to the limit and I improved six tenths of a second on the last lap compared to my first try. The soft tyre on the front is much better for our bike,” he said.

“I would like to use it tomorrow, but it will be a long race, so we have to improve the bike a little bit more during the warm-up to be more comfortable with the harder tyres. This year the engine and the clutch are different.

“I didn't expect to be on the front row, because yesterday's situation was very bad. But little by little we worked hard as a team and managed to improve the bike,” he added.

“Unfortunately with the track temperature we had some problems with the bumps and it is much better with the softer one, but it is better than yesterday.”

Lorenzo feels his position on the front row is far from ideal, but the Spanish star – still searching for his first victory this season – intends to make the most of it.

“I don't have the same feeling, making it difficult to make similar starts to last year,” he said.

“Starting from third place of the grid is not the best position, because you are too much on the inside for the first corner, but it is still better to be on the first row than to be on the second. It's a good position.

“Let's try to improve the bike for tomorrow and try to stay with the front group during the race.”
