MotoGP Silverstone: ‘Proud’ Rossi: The record I didn’t want!

“I'm very proud, because it is a great achievement… But it is also the worst number and the worst record!” – Valentino Rossi.
It is a MotoGP record that Valentino Rossi says he didn't want.

On Sunday at Silverstone the seven-time 500cc/MotoGP champion made his 246th premier-class start, beating the previous record held by Alex Barros.

After finishing third behind Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo in the British Grand Prix, Rossi spoke about the achievement:

“First of all I'm very proud, because it is a great achievement and it means that it's a long, long time that I am here,” said the 35-year-old, who made his premier-class debut in 2000.

“But it is also the worst number and the worst record! I don't like because it means I'm very old! I prefer records for the number of podiums or number of victories. But I'm very, very proud to be here on the podium after so many races. I enjoy a lot.”

Rossi, who was fielding questions from the media while also watching his VR46 team in action during the Silverstone Moto3 race, joked: “I'm multi-tasking! Like girls!”

Having beaten Dani Pedrosa in Sunday's race, Rossi is now just ten points behind the Repsol Honda rider in the fight for title runner-up behind Marc Marquez.

It's sometimes easy to forget how much of an astonishing rider Rossi is. He is now the most experienced rider ever in the premier class and he still finishes on the podium 8.5 seconds behind the winner, not bad!
