MotoGP Silverstone: Home roar for Redding, builds Factory case

Scott Redding completed a memorable British MotoGP debut as the top home rider, adding evidence to support his quest for a 2015 RC213V seat in the process.

The 21-year-old Englishman was again the top Open class Honda rider at Silverstone, also finishing ahead of the Factory option Ducatis of Yonny Hernandez and Cal Crutchlow after a race long battle for tenth.

“I just want to get on a Factory bike [next year] and see what I can do,” said Redding. “If I was finishing as the second Open Honda they [Honda] are not going to want me on the Factory bike. End of story.

“So I don't have a choice: I told myself during the summer break, 'You have to be the first Open Honda, minimum'. Meaning I also need a gap [to the second Open Honda]. So always my target is to put a good gap between us in the race, because I have to show Honda that I'm different to the other guys and have a bit more in me.”

With former world champion Nicky Hayden still absent with wrist injuries, Redding finished the British Grand Prix with a 13-second advantage over next best RCV1000R rider Karel Abraham, in 13th.

Redding admitted that he had struggled in the early stages with a full tank of fuel but as the load decreased his confidence aboard his Gresini-Honda increased.

"It was tough in the beginning and I was struggling to get a rhythm on a full tank of fuel and I was pushing the front," said Redding. "I think that I could have done with using the harder front tyre, but we didn't test it all weekend so I didn't want to gamble on it.

"I was trying to catch the other guys and I was also using the 340mm discs, the more powerful ones, and the temperature was on a fine line and so not at 100%. So there was a few things that it took time to get everything going. But mid-race I started to click and with the fuel dropping I started to get more comfortable and catch Hernandez and pull away from Cal. He was closing at one stage and it got tight but I kept plugging away."

Redding has impressed the paddock with his progress this season - reached a new high with sixth place in Friday practice - and felt he had made another step forward in his development as a MotoGP rider.

"I made another big step here this weekend and we closed the one-second gap in qualifying which was good. I've just enjoyed the whole weekend and the sixth position on Friday felt nice to be up there for once. I knew that it wouldn't be like that for the weekend but it felt nice and the race was quite good. It's just that feeling and that adrenaline of going for a win or the battle on the last lap, but I had pressure to catch Yonny and stay in front of him but apart from that it felt quite casual."

Having talked all weekend about the excitement of racing at home, Redding once again praised the Silverstone crowd after the race.

"I felt a lot of that. It was good this weekend to see the fans a few times and do some stuff on stage which was amazing. I stopped at Luffield on the in-lap at the end of the race and pulled up in front of my fans and waved to them and had a massive roar from everyone. I revved the bike a couple of times to give them that feeling up close. They just went nuts and it was nice to give them something back."

While Silverstone was Redding's home race the next round of the championship is Gresini's home round at Misano, where further news is expected regarding the team's 2015 plans.

While Gresini must decide between continuing its long association with Honda or become the official Aprilia team, Redding has set his sights on securing the Factory class RC213V - currently used by team-mate Alvaro Bautista - wherever it is run next year.

Redding is twelfth in the world championship, two places and twelve points ahead of former 250cc world champion Hiroshi Aoyama (Aspar).
