MotoGP Silverstone: Laverty ‘A job well done’
“We exceeded what we thought we could do and we beat the other former CRT bikes. So a job well done I think” - Michael Laverty.
Michael Laverty wasn't able to reward the PBM team with points at its final home British MotoGP appearance, but felt they couldn't have got much more from their CRT-based machine.
Laverty qualified 20th out of the 23 riders, but shot to 16th during a strong opening race lap.
While keeping the Production Hondas at bay proved impossible, the Ulsterman was able to comfortably beat the Avintia and Ioda riders, plus team-mate Broc Parkes, on his way to 17th.
“I got a really good start and was on the back of Crutchlow and Redding on the first lap,” said Laverty, riding the ART-powered PBM. “Then the three Hondas came past - Leon [Camier], Abraham and Aoyama - and I just struggled to stay with them.
“Top end wasn't too bad, but they just annihilated me on acceleration, especially in third gear.
“I got better as the tyre grip went off, but by that time I had lost a few seconds to Aoyama, De Angelis and Leon. Then when Leon started to lose touch with the others I thought I might get back to him. So I tried to really dig in and push, but I made a few mistakes and ran wide so in the end I had to make a decision to bring it home.”
Laverty crossed the line five-seconds behind Camier, but comfortably clear of closest 'CRT' rival Petrucci, on the full Aprilia ART machine.
“I'm happy to be six seconds up on Petrucci and Barbara,” Laverty continued. “It's good to beat the guys on similar level equipment and be almost on the back of the Production Hondas, which were working really well around here. So I'm quite happy with that.
“Grip was a bit of an issue, spinning a lot, but overall I was stronger than I expected. I thought I'd drop into the 2m 6s once the grip dropped, but I managed to stay in 2m 5s all race apart from when I made the mistakes.
“That was a pretty reasonable pace for our bike and, as I've said all year, whenever you meet or exceed your target you have to go home happy. Today we exceeded what we thought we could do and we beat the other former CRT bikes. So a job well done I think.
“I was happy at Indy when I got some points, but I rode just as well today as I did at Indy so I can't complain too much.”
PBM is to expand its BSB presence next season, with Laverty and Parkes yet to confirm their plans.
