MotoGP Misano: Test gives Crutchlow hope

"When we tested here the laptimes were pleasantly fast" - Cal Crutchlow.
In a difficult season for Cal Crutchlow this weekend's San Marino MotoGP offers a glimmer of hope, a recent test at the Misano circuit offering the chance to find a baseline set-up prior to the race weekend.

The Englishman has struggled throughout the season to adapt to the Ducati and has consistently been outpaced by Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone who have far more confidence on the GP14 while cornering.

Speaking to the media today Crutchlow was in a more positive frame of mind compared to the previous race at Silverstone. However he was still realistic about the challenge he faces this weekend.

"It's nice to be here in Misano after a positive test here before Silverstone," said Crutchlow. "We did a one day test because we didn't have any new parts to try but we tried somethings with the setup and, as I explained at Silverstone, here at Misano we were a bit better and closer to the other Ducati guys. That's the aim here again this weekend.

"I tried to change some things at Silverstone but it wasn't possible to be competitive there but I'll try again this weekend and hopefully we can have a stronger weekend. Silverstone wasn't acceptable for my terms of performance and I felt at the limit so we need to improve on that result because we were too far back compared to the other Ducati riders but I have no excuse as to why.

"With the feeling of the bike I feel at the limit but I'm more positive for this weekend at Misano because we had a test here and we can go back to those settings and see if that works. When we tested here the laptimes were pleasantly fast but I think that the track conditions were quite good so we'll have to evaluate them again tomorrow and start working from there."

With wet weather forecast for tomorrow's sessions having tested at the circuit so recently could hand Ducati an advantage with teams potentially losing a full day of dry weather running.

The Ducati works well in the wet and having already been able to spend time working on developing a basic electronics setup and other settings the weather could offer some additional hope for this weekend:

"Obviously in the rain we had no problem with it at Brno, I think that I was the fastest guy on track in Brno. I think that we'll miss a day tomorrow with the settings, but we can go back to the setting that we had at the test and it's just a case of seeing if that setting can work in the conditions of the track at that time because when the conditions change you have to change the bike. Hopefully it'll benefit us a little because everyone else will lose a day and [at the test] we gained a day."
