Is Jack Miller ready for MotoGP?

On March 22nd, Jack Miller was still seeking his first Moto3 podium. Six months later he was confirmed as a 2015 MotoGP rider, having signed a long-term deal with Honda.

Between those two dates the Australian teenager - riding a competitive machine for the first time in his world championship career - claimed four wins and three further podiums to hold a slim title lead.

Miller will be 20 years and two months old when he makes his MotoGP race debut at Qatar next season. That is one month older than Marc Marquez at the time of his 2013 debut.

Repsol Honda star Marquez went on to make history by winning the title at his first attempt, but Miller will be on very different machinery, spending his first year on an Open class bike at the LCR team.

So why the controversy?

The big difference between Marquez and Miller is that the Australian is skipping the intermediate Moto2 category, for 600cc machines, completely. That means Miller will step straight from a 250cc Moto3 (around 54hp) to 1000cc MotoGP machine (over 240hp).

Marquez meanwhile spent two seasons in the Moto2 class. Marquez also arrived with five seasons of grand prix under his belt, while Miller will have completed just three, after six 125cc starts in 2011.

Like much in racing, Miller and Honda's decision is a calculated risk and certainly raises questions about the purpose of the Moto2 class.

But if you were Miller what would you have done? Turning down a long term Honda MotoGP contract - thought to be three years - is a brave decision by any rider and Miller may never have got such a chance again.

After all, the likes of Jonathan Rea and Colin Edwards have found there is no such thing as a guaranteed Honda MotoGP ride even if carrying the company's hopes for years in other world championship classes.

Plenty of riders have done well in Moto3 or 125's and then not been as competitive on the bigger bikes. That's why Moto2 is such a good proving ground, if you can dice for wins there, then you're a good bet for MotoGP. It's a bit of a gamble to take someone who hasn't gone through that phase. As a rider though, he'd obviously be a fool not to take this opportunity.
