No rider has scored more points in the last six MotoGP races than Jorge Lorenzo.

After his worst ever start to a premier-class season it's been quite a comeback for the double world champion, who recently toasted his first victory of the year at Aragon.

"It is been a really difficult season, especially at the beginning, with the two big mistakes in the first two races," said Lorenzo, who fell while leading on the opening lap in Qatar then made a massive jump start in Texas.

"I just made one crash until now, but it was in the most important race, the first one. Then little by little everything started to get much better for us, technically and physically.

"For quite a long time now we have been in good shape, we've had some good results and scored the most points in the second part of the championship so we are again competitive.

"Aragon has obviously been fantastic for us because before the race we expected to probably finish after the Honda guys, so lose more points for second in the championship and probably fighting with Vale for third place.

"But finally we won the race while Pedrosa and Valentino made a mistake, so we are closer to second in the championship."

Indeed, although still fourth in the standings, Lorenzo is now just twelve points behind Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi and 15 from Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa.

With Pedrosa's team-mate Marc Marquez already on the verge of winning his second consecutive crown, Lorenzo has his sights on securing the runner-up spot in the remaining four rounds.

"First position is almost impossible now. Marc is going to be champion sooner or later, so our goal now is to try to win races, finish in the top two at every race and try to finish second in the championship."

Lorenzo was speaking on Thursday at Motegi in Japan, where he claimed a memorable victory over the Honda riders last season to force a final round showdown with Marquez.

"Last year here was fantastic for us. It was one of the most wonderful victories in the year, because winning here at the home of our main rival is always a pleasure, against two competitive riders like Dani and Marc."

Asked who he now considers as his biggest challenge for the runner-up spot, team-mate Rossi replied: "Difficult to say... More Dani because he has more points. But from the Sachsenring Jorge has been riding very well and I think he is the rider who was scored the most since then. He will be very, very dangerous for second place."

While Marquez has won eleven races so far this year, Lorenzo, Rossi and Pedrosa have one victory apiece.
