Andrea Dovizioso put Ducati on top of the timesheets by 0.440s during Friday afternoon practice at Motegi, Japan.

The Italian had used the extra-soft rear tyre - only available to the Ducati and the Open class riders - to jump from third to first on his 20th and final lap.

However that flying time complimented Dovizioso's pace on the soft rear (his hardest option), which had seen him become the first rider to beat Jorge Lorenzo's morning best in the opening minutes of FP2 and set four laps under 1m 46s.

Riding the GP14.2 evolution bike for the second event, Dovizioso remained fastest until Lorenzo - running the medium front and soft rear tyres - returned to the top just after the midway point of the 45-minutes.

Despite his late demotion it was another highly impressive session for Aragon victor and defending Motegi winner Lorenzo, who recorded more sub 1m 46s laps than any other rider.

By contrast world champion Marc Marquez, who can wrap-up the 2014 title if he maintains his 75-point advantage on Sunday, didn't look at ease on his Repsol Honda. After falling on his way to second behind Lorenzo in the morning, Marquez could only manage sixth place (+0.799s) in the afternoon, with just two laps below 1m 46s.

Marquez was outpaced by fellow RCV riders Stefan Bradl (third) and his own team-mate Dani Pedrosa (fourth) who looked to have his own issues to solve under braking. However, like Bradl, Pedrosa still punched out five 1m 45s laps.

Fifth place in both Friday sessions went to Lorenzo's Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi (+0.750s), riding for the first time after his heavy Aragon fall. Tech 3 Yamaha team-mates Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, plus Andrea Iannone (Pramac Ducati) and Cal Crutchlow (Ducati) completed the top ten.

Pramac's GP13 rider Yonny Hernandez was the first of four riders not to improve this afternoon, dropping him from fourth to twelfth (tenth on combined times).

Hiroshi Aoyama fell from his Aspar Honda at the very end of the session but remained the fastest home rider with Yamaha wild-card Katsuyuki Nakasuga one place behind him in 16th.
