Marc Marquez conceded he is 'not in the best situation' to reclaim the MotoGP world title at Honda's home circuit of Motegi in Japan tomorrow.

The Repsol Honda rider will start the race from row two in fourth position after clocking a best time of 1m 44.775s behind team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Marquez, though - who only missed out on the front row by 0.020s - expects the Yamaha challenge to be a tough nut to crack and feels Jorge Lorenzo in particular has the strongest race pace.

Marquez must beat Pedrosa, while losing no more than three points to Rossi and no more than 15 points to Lorenzo to be crowned. In other words, he'll probably need to win his twelfth race of the year.

"Of course at the moment we are not in the best situation to get the title tomorrow, because Valentino and Dani are in front of me. I need to finish in front of them," Marquez said.

"We will try to do our best and see during the race how I feel, where is Valentino, where is Dani, where is Jorge. If for some reason I feel I'm taking too much risk than I would prefer to wait.

"For tomorrow I think the strongest one will be Lorenzo, he is fifth on the grid - behind me - but he is the strongest for the race rhythm. We will try to do our best and fight for victory."

Marquez, though, is pleased with the improvement he has made on the RCV from Friday and felt especially comfortable while riding in race configuration during FP4.

"I'm happy, even though we didn't achieve our goal of getting onto the front row, because we have improved ahead of tomorrow. The pace that we have is good," he said.

"It's a pity that we didn't find a perfect lap in qualifying, but we are confident for tomorrow and ready to fight for the win.

"Our pace is similar to that of Rossi, Pedrosa and Lorenzo and this is important. We also shouldn't overlook [Andrea] Dovizioso, who also has a very good pace on race tyres.

"It looks like this weekend everything is more difficult! I don't know why," he added. "Yesterday with the brake problem and then today the [engine] problem in FP3. In the afternoon I was able to fight for pole, but in the first run we had another small problem.

"But in the end I'm quite happy because we've improved a lot compared with yesterday. I'm riding well because especially in FP4 I felt so comfortable and consistent."

Marquez's fastest lap was 0.273s behind Andrea Dovizioso's pole time.

Motegi is the first of four remaining MotoGP rounds in 2014.
