Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest Friday practice time for the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island, despite a heavy fall at the end of the afternoon session.

Lorenzo - like Andrea Iannone, Pol Espargaro and Andrea Dovizioso - lost the front under braking and was dumped harshly onto the asphalt.

Yamaha riders Lorenzo and Pol Espargaro fell on the approach to the Turn 4 Hairpin, with Ducati GP14.2 riders Dovizioso and Iannone falling into the MG corner, after Lukey Heights.

All were unhurt although their bikes looked to sustain significant damage.

Despite the early exit, Lorenzo remained at the head of the timesheets by 0.150s from newly crowned double world champion Marc Marquez. Iannone likewise kept third (+0.201s) despite missing the closing minutes, with Dovizioso returning to set the fourth best time (+0.343s).

Lorenzo's team-mate Valentino Rossi was fifth (+0.352s), the Italian notably sticking with the extra-soft front tyre.

Bridgestone are debuting a new asymmetric soft front tyre this weekend, alongside the standard soft. Both tyres have the same white line marking, meaning it is difficult to know which tyre was being used when the riders fell, however Lorenzo is thought to have been on the new asymmetric front.

Open class star Aleix Espargaro had used a soft rear tyre to set the morning pace, but could not improve on his time and was left sixth in the afternoon (+0.456s) for Forward Yamaha.

Dovizioso's team-mate Cal Crutchlow, on the GP14, was seventh in both sessions (+0.464s) with Tech 3's Espargaro the first rider outside of half-a-second from Lorenzo.

Pramac's Yonny Hernandez, on last year's GP13, rose to ninth with Dani Pedrosa completing the top ten for Repsol Honda. Pedrosa, whose crew chief Mike Leitner is leaving at the end of this season (see separate story), was 0.687s from Lorenzo.

Lorenzo has won the last two MotoGP races and is also the defending Phillip Island winner. His run of form has taken him to within three points of Rossi and Pedrosa, presently tied for second in the standings.
