MotoGP Valencia: Marquez hails 'incredible' end to season

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez is ready to celebrate in style after capping the MotoGP season with a record 13th victory on a day when his brother Alex was also crowned Moto3 World Champion
Marc Marquez reflected on an 'incredible' day after the Repsol Honda rider completed his championship winning season with a victory at Valencia in Spain.

The occasion was extra special as Marquez's younger brother Alex secured the Moto3 crown on a proud day for the family.

Honda has given Marquez a day off from post-season testing at the Spanish circuit on Monday and the 21-year-old intends to celebrate a stunning season in style.

“Today is an incredible day for me, for my family and for the team because 20 minutes before the race I was celebrating the title of my brother,” he said.

“It was a really difficult race and it was important for me and the team, because it was kind of like Aragon, and today we chose a better strategy. I'm happy for that and now we must enjoy 2014 because it will be difficult and almost impossible to repeat, especially for me and my brother.

“I want to say thank-you to Honda because they gave me a free day tomorrow!” he added. “But we must enjoy it and it's important for the mechanics to celebrate and it will be important on Tuesday and Wednesday and we will concentrate on the 2015 bike and some new parts.”

Marquez conceded that he had considered pulling in to switch bikes as the threat of rain loomed during the race, but eventually he opted correctly to remain on track as the spots of rain eased.

“On one lap I was thinking to change the bike and I made the sign to my team with my leg that I would come in next time, but then I decided to stay out,” he said.

“It was wet but not really wet. Today we did the best strategy but in Aragon we were wrong. It was the opposite for [Jorge] Lorenzo, who did the best move in Aragon and today the wrong strategy.”

Marquez set a new premier class record of 13 wins in a season to better Mick Doohan's tally of 12 victories from 2012, but the Honda star wasn't putting too much stock into the achievement, pointing out that Aussie Doohan had won more races as a percentage over a shorter season.

“It is not a record that I am really, really happy to beat because - honestly - before there were less races in a season,” Marquez said.

“So Doohan won more than me [as a percentage]. He won 12 from 15 races. So 13 is a new record, but not so important.”

Can't fault his comments here...we all agree. Still, thirteen wins in a season will almost guarantee the it should. There might be some celebrations at Casa de Marquez a noche...
