Scott Redding closed an impressive rookie MotoGP campaign with his seventh top ten finish of the year, confirming top Open Honda honours ahead of a move to factory RC213V machinery at the Marc VDS team.

Redding fought with factory-class riders Bradley Smith, Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl at various stages of the 30 laps and, while handicapped by a lack of horsepower, came away satisfied with tenth position in his final Gresini appearance.

"It was a good race to end the season," said Redding. "I started the race with a seven lap old tyre, the dual compound, and the rear was dropping off quite a lot so the rain kind of helped a little bit. I took advantage of that and got stuck in with those other guys and I didn't hesitate and had a battle with Alvaro and Bradley. When it started to dry out again horsepower started to come into it again and it started to drop again so I just did the best that I could out there."

When asked about his fight with Smith, Redding admitted he enjoyed tussling with his compatriot, but that at times it was somewhat aggressive.

"Every time that I passed Bradley he would pass back so aggressively and wouldn't even hold the line so I'd just pass him back again. It was nice to have a battle with Bradley, it's been a long time, and to come out on top for once. I had to make the aggressive moves and just go for it."

While the top ten finish was encouraging, it was clear that Redding's mind is now focussed on next season with Marc VDS.

That move will start tomorrow with the first day of testing for 2015 and for Redding it will be an opportunity to answer some of his own questions about the bike and his own potential:

"It was the same today again, if I had a decent bike where would I finish? This is what I'm always questioning and next year with the right machinery underneath me we'll see. I'll have to be 100% dedicated and do the best that I can for next year and see what I've got."

True. It was developed to be an inexpensive off-the-shelf CRT competitor and it achieved that goal perfectly.
Problem is the rules changed (again) and open class became works bikes with standard ECU's. There was no way the customer Honda could compete with that and it was never intended to do so.
