MotoGP: Crutchlow smashes Sepang personal best

Cal Crutchlow smashed his Sepang personal best lap time by eight tenths of a second despite braking issues during Wednesday's MotoGP test.

The Englishman, who has moved to LCR Honda from Ducati, is suffering exactly the same braking problems as world champion Marc Marquez.

Nevertheless, Crutchlow joined an elite group of riders to break the two-minute barrier with a 1m 59.658s on his sixth lap of the final day of Bridgestone testing. That put the satellite rider third on the timesheets, 0.543s behind Marquez and two tenths from Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.

“It's my fastest lap around here by nearly eight tenths of a second,” Crutchlow said at lunchtime. “I actually felt I never pushed to my maximum. I made a couple of mistakes and know I lost four tenths, but that's part of racing and I'm sure the other guys on their laps made some mistakes as well.

“At the moment that's the timesheet… We'll go back out later and try some more things. Maybe another race simulation. I had some big problems on my long run, simply because we don't have any braking power, the same as Marc had on day one.

“The brake lever is coming back and it's really inconsistent. One corner is fine and the next corner you brake and there is no [pressure until the lever is near the handlebar] and then you run out of brake because you need to squeeze it more.

“It's exactly the same as Marc had. Initially when you brake there is no brake. Then it starts to brake after…It happened yesterday and now again. It seems to be worse with longer runs and if the bike moves a little bit [during braking].”

Marquez and Repsol Honda were baffled by the braking issue for the entire opening day, then found a cure on day two. Crutchlow didn't want to reveal too much about the likely cause but did state “I don't think it's fluid temperature.”

Beyond the brakes, Crutchlow's aim is to continue learning his new RC213V machine.

“Just because we've gone not to bad today doesn't mean we are there and that I'm completely comfortable and confident. We've done a not too bad job and worked through what we've got, but we keep going back to the same setting.

“I feel ok on that setting but we need to improve and if we go away from the setting we are on that's when I have some more problems. I still do decent lap times but don't feel as comfortable.”

Crutchlow's lap time is almost one-second faster than his best at the first test earlier this month, when he was eleventh quickest.

I can still see (unfortunately) the potential for Cal to have a bit of a 'Bradl' season on that bike/team. People still don't get it that while it is a 'factory' Honda, its not THE FACTORY Honda that MM & DP get, nor does it come with all the code and all the advantages and all of the data engineers etc. Its more than just a paintjob that separates an LCR from a Repsol, and tiny, tiny, tiny differences count in MotoGP. I think Cals doing a very good job and I wish him luck. But I still believe that its unrealistic to expect him to get the package to challenge right at the sharp end (even if he's riding well enough) - he has the wrong stickers on his fairing to get that kind of opportunity. Ultimate pace and position can be regulated to a large degree by what support and data and solutions he & LCR are permitted - anyone who fails to consider that is I am afraid very naive.
