Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding achieved his team's aim of being within a second of the fastest time during the opening night of testing in Qatar.

Redding lapped in 1m 56.112s to complete day one 0.847s down on Ducati rider Andrea Iannone's best lap and just over half a second behind Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez, who was fastest of the riders unable to use the soft option Bridgestone tyre in third.

Young Briton Redding, 10th fastest overall, was able to gain more confidence on the RC213V at the Losail International Circuit and says he still has plenty more to come over the course of the weekend.

"I'm happy with today, mainly because we didn't really change much on the bike at all, other then throwing tyres and fuel into it," said Redding.

"I felt comfortable on the bike from the start today and that helped to build my confidence, which is the most important thing.

"I'm going faster, closing on the guys at the top of the timesheet, so we're coming across things that we can improve with the bike. Even so, I still feel I've got a few tenths in my pocket, especially as we spent today on the harder tyre," added the 22-year-old.

"We won't make any big changes for tomorrow, other than to try a couple of setting changes so Chris and me can see how the bike reacts. Overall today has been a pretty solid start to the test."

The three-day test precedes the opening round of the 2015 MotoGP World Championship under the floodlights in Qatar, which takes place at the Losail venue from March 26-29.
