Marc Marquez starts his quest to become Spain's first ever triple MotoGP champion at Qatar this weekend - when the Repsol Honda star will be hoping for a multi-rider victory battle.

"Of course if the fight is with one other rider, it's easier to manage, to make a strategy, something like that, but it's funnier when you have a big group," said Marquez, who didn't lose a 2014 race until August and claimed a record 13 victories by the close of the season. "Because then, OK, you can maybe finish first or fifth, but it's funnier because you never know and you must give your 100%."

The question arose due to the ultra-tight lap times seen in 2015 pre-season testing, with the top 14 riders within one-second - and three tenths covering 4th to 12th - at Losail just over a week ago.

"It was incredible already in Malaysia, but also last week here. In three tenths were many, many riders. It will be interesting, because if you don't push enough even in the free practice, you can go in Q1.

"But yes, for some reason, it all looks more tight [this year], but we will try to do our best, to do our job and our work, to be ready to fight for the top positions... For the first race the motivation is really, really high, and everyone wants to start the season in a good way."

While Marquez may prefer a multi-rider fight, his two previous Qatar MotoGP races have ended in a dual with Valentino Rossi. The Italian beat Marquez to third on his MotoGP debut in 2013, with Marquez turning the tables for a close victory over Rossi last year.

"The first year and also last year I fight with Valentino. We will see this year if we fight again. But normally the race is really good, I don't know if it's the circuit or something, or the first race, but this year it will be quite similar. Because already we did a test here, like I said, will be really close. It will be a great show."

While Marquez missed most of 2014 pre-season testing due to a broken leg, his 2015 preparations have seen him classified first, first and second in terms of best lap time at the official tests.

"It's difficult to say when we will see the real competitors for the championship... Maybe when we arrive in Europe we will see the level of each rider, and each bike. But before we arrive in Europe, we have three races and the points are the same, so all are important."
