MotoGP Losail: Ducati sets new standard for pole man Dovizioso

Andrea Dovizioso says he has never felt as positive about a MotoGP machine before as he does with Ducati's GP15 after taking pole for the Qatar night race
Pole man Andrea Dovizioso says he has never had such a positive feeling with a MotoGP bike after taking the top spot on the Ducati GP15 for Sunday's opening round of the World Championship in Qatar.

Dovizioso clinched pole with a time of 1m 54.113s to head up the front row from Repsol Honda pair Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez.

The Italian rider has made strong progress with the GP15 throughout the pre-season tests and Dovizioso couldn't be happier with the performance of the machine ahead of the curtain-raiser under the floodlights at Losail.

Asked when he last felt so good on a MotoGP machine, Dovizioso replied: “Maybe never! When you make a special lap you have always the feeling you can make better but, I don't know…

“That lap time is not something impossible. It's a really good lap time with the soft tyre for the qualifying. The really good thing is the feeling I had on the bike and I was able to do what I wanted and this didn't happen many times in my career so I'm really happy especially for that.

“My pace in FP4 [on the medium rear tyre] was really, really good and that I think is more impressive than the qualifying so I'm really happy with that and everything is really good for the race.”

Dovizioso, though, says he will have a better understanding of his prospects for the season ahead after the completion of the 22-lap race.

“For the race, with my experience, I can say that in the race always something different happens from the practice,” he said.

“In the race we can understand our level because everything is different and I want to wait until after the race to understand everything and we will understand our level for the future.

“Today we made the same pace [in FP4], me and Marc. But I believe for the race tomorrow this will not be the reality; the other riders, Dani [Pedrosa], [Jorge] Lorenzo, Valentino [Rossi] and [Andrea] Iannone will be closer than five tenths, but like I say in the race everything is different and we will understand where we have to improve,” he added.

“Last year it was an unbelievable lap time [for pole at Motegi] because the bike wasn't good enough. When you make this good lap time with the right feeling I am happy, but every time I made a good lap time last year I wasn't happy because I knew what I had to do [to achieve] that lap time.”

Dovizioso also confirmed that he is likely to race with the aerodynamic 'wings' on Sunday, which were first used during the Qatar test.

SuperSic, Not sure why you would not like Dani? I have met him and he really is a super nice guy, and not arrogant like some of the GP riders. I certainly wish Dani well and if he could win the championship, that would be great.
