Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa stressed the importance of starting from the front row of the grid after qualifying second quickest for the Qatar MotoGP.

Pedrosa beat his team-mate Marc Marquez into second place as he finished 0.217s off the pole time set by Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and hailed his place on row one for the night race at Losail as a 'great thing'.

"We were working a lot during the practice and trying to get the best feeling for the race, but I think today it was important to be on the front row," Pedrosa said.

"We could see that ever the factory riders and non-factory riders' lap times were very good and all the laps were really, really tight. One or two tenths down could change a lot in terms of the positions so to be second is a great thing. It was fantastic, because I think that it was one of my fastest laps at this track.

"We could see already in the test that they were fast [Ducati riders] but also the other Ducatis are quite in front, so overall at this track they are going very well," Pedrosa added.

"Always it is important to get good results but step by step; today is the qualifying and now we have to focus on tomorrow's race."
