Jorge Lorenzo hopes the combination of an improved Yamaha M1 and better tyres will allow him to challenge for victory this weekend in the Austin MotoGP.

Lorenzo had been in contention for a win at Losail in Qatar with Andrea Dovizioso and his Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi until an issue with his helmet hampered his vision, causing him to drop off the pace of the leaders as he eventually crossed the line in fourth place.

The two-time premier class champion concedes that the Circuit of the Americas in Texas does not favour the Yamaha, but Lorenzo is confident that he has a chance of repeating his rostrum feat at the track from 2013, when he finished third behind Repsol Honda pair Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.

"Qatar is in the past and we thought our result would be better, but now I'm just focusing on next race in Austin. I look forward to racing there once again, even if usually it's not a track that suits our bike," said Lorenzo.

"In the past I was able to get on the podium so I want to do my best in Texas and try to keep as focused as I was in Qatar.

"I'm eager to race as soon as possible because I feel very fit and mentally strong. Hopefully we can do a better job than last year because both me and the bike have improved and maybe also the new tyres give us a chance to fight for the race.

"From my side, I'm going to push at the maximum."

Lorenzo endured a difficult race in Texas last year, finishing in 10th position on the Yamaha after a jump-start as he lost further ground in the championship on the back of his first-lap spill in the Qatar night race.
