Qatar MotoGP winner Valentino Rossi set the fourth fastest time during a wet opening practice for round two in Texas.

The Movistar Yamaha rider was 1.191s behind Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso at the end of a session interupted due to a dog on the track.

"Very strange to see the rain here in Texas but also very strange to see a dog running along the track!" Rossi said. "We expected bad weather and in fact here it is. It's good that we have had the chance to ride on the wet. The grip of the track is good. The first practice was not so bad: we are in fourth position but I am quite happy because I have a good feeling with the bike.

"Although we still have a lot of work to do, it's a good way to start the weekend. On the wet everything changes: it's difficult to understand our potential on the dry in such circumstances but we are quite satisfied because in the past we rarely were strong under the rain so being in the top 5 is good."

Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was ninth fastest, 2.084s from the top.

"This was the first time on the wet here at COTA so it was interesting to see the bike's behaviour and the grip under such conditions," Lorenzo said. "To be honest it was not so bad, the only problem is that in some corners of the circuit there are some wet patches that make our lives a little bit difficult.

"I was the slowest Yamaha rider so I need some time to arrive to the top level. We need to improve a bit the rear grip and we'll use FP2 this afternoon to work on this. The weather forecast has not good news for us but anyway the weekend is very long and let's see what happens tomorrow and on Sunday.

"I am a bit cold and let's see if I get better later in the day. It's been hard to be competitive today because I had no confidence on the wet so we need to improve in these conditions. We are going to try something in the afternoon to improve, although I think we are not so far from our competitors."

FP2 takes place this afternoon.
