Just 0.174s from victory in Qatar, Andrea Dovizioso put the new Ducati GP15 on top of a wet opening practice for round two in Texas.

The Italian toppled Repsol Honda's world champion Marc Marquez from the top of the timesheets by 0.462s on his 15th and final lap. Third fastest Scott Redding was over one-second from Dovizioso.

"It's too early to speak about [how we could do in] a wet race on Sunday because the lap time will drop and we have to see how much rain we have in each session," Dovizioso said. "Sure the start has been very good but it doesn't show the reality for everybody.

"The GP15 is good in the wet but it's different to the GP14. The GP14 had the limit of turning, also in the wet, but this bike doesn't have that. But the braking and the rear grip in the GP14 was quite good, so we can still improve the GP15 and I think that we can be faster.

"Under braking [the GP15] is the same as in the dry, so it's not the best and I wasn't 100 percent confident but the lap time was good. It looks like every session will be wet. I always prefer to race in the dry though."

Team-mate and fellow Qatar podium finisher Andrea Iannone was left down in 19th after a technical issue.

"I had a problem with the gearbox sensor on the bike so I still don't understand a lot about the bike," he said. "I'm happy to see Dovi quick because it's our first practice in wet conditions and the bike is quite good and has a high performance. I'm sure that in the next practice I will go faster."
