MotoGP Jerez: Smith: I have very good memories here

Improving qualifying form will be key to Bradley Smith bridging the gap to the top five in Sunday's MotoGP encounter at Jerez
Bradley Smith is happy to be back at the scene of his first grand prix victory as he looks to consolidate his strong start to the MotoGP season in Jerez.

The Oxford rider was triumphant at the Andalusian track in 2009 and has since scored two top-ten finishes at the Spanish Grand Prix as a MotoGP rider.

Speaking at the pre-race press conference, Smith says he is hoping he can build and improve on two consecutive sixth place finishes that have put him seventh in the championship standings.

“[I have] Very good memories here,” said the 24-year old. “[My] First grand prix victory and I've had quite good runs ever since, so I'm excited to come back here. It's been a very good first three races.

We've been very consistent and I have to be happy with that. But of course consistency only gets you so far and we've kind of plateaued in that sixth position, which on paper and points looks good but we want our performance be a little bit better than that.”

Smith had spoken of a new, calmer approach to the race weekend that has improved communication within the Monster Tech 3 garage prior to the first European round of 2015. Now he has earmarked his qualifying performances as an area in which he needs to improve.

“The next thing is to take that next little step and move a little bit further forward. I've been qualifying really bad. Tenth position in qualifying doesn't really help me in the races. So I need to improve that a little bit more then try and find a bit more pace in the race if I can. But it's the same situation for everybody. So we'll see how it goes this weekend. I'm excited for it.

It looks like it's going to be a real hot one, which normally means a greasy track here at Jerez. So I expect lack of grip, a little bit like we had in Argentina, but of course we have to go on track and see what happens.”
