MotoGP Jerez: Hernandez confident of top-ten challenge

Yonny Hernandez qualifies inside the top ten for the second time in 2015 and believes he has the pace to hold his position in Sunday's race
Yonny Hernandez put the disappointment of non-finishes in Austin and Argentina behind him to qualify ninth fastest in MotoGP qualifying at Jerez.

Along with team-mate Danilo Petrucci, the Columbian moved into Q2 courtesy of a top-two time in Q1 and claimed a third row starting slot with a time 1.5 seconds slower than Jorge Lorenzo.

Speaking after qualifying Hernandez said, “I'm happy because a few races ago we had problems. Like Austin. Like Argentina. The qualifying was really good. We do some really good work. Compared from yesterday to today I have a really good feeling with the bike.

“The changing of the set-up give me more feeling to make the lap times and more rhythm with the tyre,” he said. “This is positive for the race tomorrow. I hope to make a good start and do my best in the race. I have a little less feeling in the hot conditions but it's for everyone. I have less grip. With the Ducati for turning it's a little more difficult. We do good work in the qualifying.

Hernandez tested the softer tyre that is available to him on Saturday but believes the harder option is the logical choice for the 27 lap race.

“It's like that I think it's the hard one. With the soft it is too soft for the race and the race is long. I don't have a good feeling. Maybe for the lap time but for the race it's not good.

“I think I do my best every race. My objective every race is the top ten. If we get into the top ten I'll be really happy. I want to win but with the conditions this is a bit difficult. I think we have a good rhythm for fighting for the top ten. Then I stay focused on that.

“I need to manage with the race. With the Ducati at the beginning you can go really fast but when the tyre is done you need to manage the race. Like Qatar we were fast but the end was critical. I think the race tomorrow will be interesting.”
