MotoGP Jerez: Espargaro: Following Rossi big mistake

Pol Espargaro finally got his 2015 MotoGP season back on track after securing fifth place at Jerez but admitted he put too much pressure on his right arm when trying to follow Valentino Rossi in the first seven laps.

The Tech 3 Yamaha rider started brilliantly in Sunday's 27-lap contest, fighting with Rossi for the first three laps while Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez scrapped at the front.

It was then that the younger Espargaro brother was tensing his arm, leading to severe arm pump through the final two corners.

“I tried to follow so hard but I think it's my big mistake in the race,” he said on Sunday night. “I should let him go and let him escape. I know in the practice even we can make some similar rhythm like them. But on the race they put the sixth gear! In practice they have just five and they have an extra one... they just go.

“I tried to follow them some laps. First Jorge and Marc and after Valentino. After my arm becomes so pumped. I think it was my big mistake. I tried to relax but it becomes big and it's so difficult to relax again so I think it was my mistake.

“When Valentino overtake me. I decide to push too early in the race. Lap seven, eight I was already with my arm tired. You can imagine I did a lot of laps, more than twenty with my arm in not good condition. This race is hard for this problem. We will see at Le Mans if it will continue.”

When asked to specify where the problem was affecting him most, Espargaro said the rights of Crivillé and Ferrari then the final hairpin that end the all-action lap.

“I had two parts, in the last two corners. My problem was on the right arm and it was the long, right corners where you are playing with the throttle with the body making a lot of stress. After you have the final corner, which is a big brake. This make my arm pump, pump, pump and at the end it was even worse. It was so difficult to ride, so difficult to brake. I decide to stay fifth, it was better than crash.”

Espargaro was passed by on lap seven and from there he had to hold off a late challenge from Andrea Iannone to secure fifth, his best result since Indianapolis in 2014. It was, he said, a relief after his difficult start to the year.

“We come here with not especially big expectations. Last year we struggle a lot at this track with grip. I was a bit worried. To come here again and have some problems but straight away we were fast with a lot of feelings and grip. It was quite strange to be honest. We are happy because in a difficult track for us we did a good result. Now we go to a track that we had a good result last year. We are happy with this.

“[The season] started three races ago but my best moment is starting now so we have to take advantage of it.”

I am fine with the Open and Concession class guys getting extra fuel, and having the ability to develop the engines, but the special tires have to be taken away. It gives them the opportunity to qualify ahead of their potential and slow the Factory guys down in the beginning of the race. If they had not had the tire advantage, Rossi and Crutchlow would have had a better chance at the top 2 and made it a more interesting race.
