MotoGP Championship leader Valentino Rossi extracted more speed from his Movistar Yamaha while working on set-up at Monday's official post-race Jerez test.

Rossi set the second fastest lap of the day, just 0.042s behind Yamaha team-mate and Sunday's race winner Jorge Lorenzo. The Italian lapped 0.678s under his best race time and was particular pleased to have also beaten his qualifying time.

"This testing day was positive," Rossi began. "During the weekend we suffered with the setting, the front, and in the race I wasn't able to make the maximum.

"We didn't have many things to try, just set-up. We focused on improving the bike compared to yesterday and I am very happy because we improved a lot. We improved the lap time, the pace, the feeling with the bike and we could also improve the time we did in qualifying.

"Jorge tried a new front fork but I didn't try. We concentrated on the weight distribution and different way to set-up, but with the same material. We also tried a different seat, different shape, for the position on the bike on the the straights.

"But with the weight distribution we modified something bigger. It is a very good day because I suffered in the weekend and the race. The front was too much on the limit but we have improved a lot.

"In two weeks we will be at Le Mans and we have to do a good weekend. I like the track a lot, but first I need a few days off!"

Despite finishing third on Sunday, behind Lorenzo and reigning champion Marc Marquez, Rossi extended his title lead to 15-points over nearest rival Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) heading into round five at Le Mans.

"I arrived with a six point lead and I go home with a 15 point lead. This is positive, also because Dovi is fast, but I think it will be a hard fight with Jorge and Marc for the championship.

"I don't know who [is the biggest threat, Jorge or Marc]. I want to say Marc, but Jorge, after a weekend like this..."
