MotoGP Italy: Dovizioso: We were quick…

“We have tested at this track recently and we were quick” - Andrea Dovizioso.
This weekend's Italian Grand Prix is tipped to see Ducati in the thick of the battle for what would be a first MotoGP win since 2010.

The revived Italian factory, which has taken five podiums from the five rounds so far this season, has already set lap times 'very close to the circuit record' during a recent private test at Mugello - data from which is sure to give the team a head-start at its home event.

While a question mark hangs over Andrea Iannone's fitness (see separate story), Andrea Dovizioso is riding at his absolute best - claiming four of the team's podiums, including three second places, the first of which saw him finish just 0.174s from victory.

Throw in the Desmosedici's peerless engine output at a circuit with the highest top speeds of the season and it'll be a surprise if at least one GP15 isn't slugging it out with the likes of Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez for glory on Sunday.

“I believe that we can be competitive at Mugello because we have tested at this track recently and we were quick,” confirmed Dovizioso, who recently admitted “now the podium is not enough for us”.

“In addition the team is very motivated: we are at Mugello and this is Ducati's home race, so we all have that extra incentive to do well. At the last race however we were missing a little 'something' and so we are going to have to continue to work hard throughout this weekend.”

Mugello will also see Ducati test rider Michele Pirro make his first wild-card appearance of the season.
