Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest lap ever at Mugello in a pulsating FP3 in Italy on Saturday morning, underlining his status as MotoGP's form man as the Movistar Yamaha rider targets a third premier class win in a row this weekend.

In a dramatic twist, Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez was only 11th and the reigning world champion will have to earn his passage to Q2 via Q1 in the afternoon.

Lorenzo has his swagger back following two successive wins on the YZR-M1 at Jerez and Le Mans and it showed as he threw down the gauntlet with a blistering time of 1m 46.617s to obliterate Dani Pedrosa's previous best lap of 1m 47.157s set in 2013.
