Jorge Lorenzo began race day in ominous fashion as he headed pole-sitter and home hero Andrea Iannone in Sunday's MotoGP morning warm-up session in Mugello.

The top two and third placed Dani Pedrosa lapped under the circuit record in a session which saw the top 14 riders separated by one second.

In an eventful twenty minutes, there were crashes for both Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow while Marc Marquez finished ninth as he tested a variety of different settings for the 23-lap race.

Indeed Dovizioso's session lasted only a matter of minutes as he mysteriously fell on his out-lap and failed to post a time.

While the Italian showed no ill after effects of the spill, Crutchlow was seen putting ice on his right thumb after falling at speed on the entry to turn four.

The CWM Honda man was lying seventh behind a trio of Yamahas in fourth, fifth and sixth that was headed by Valentino Rossi.

Although frustrated at qualifying eighth, Rossi is confident of his pace for the race and finished the session 0.29s back of team-mate Lorenzo.

The Monster Tech3 duo of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro came next, showing they will be worth watching as they fight through from their respective fourth row starting slots.

A day after setting his highest MotoGP qualifying time to date, Maverick Vi?ales was one place ahead of Marquez, who pitted three times in twenty minutes as he continued to experiment with race set-up.

Scott Redding was an encouraging tenth while Eugene Laverty ended the session in 21st.
