MotoGP Assen: Broken seat ruins Dovizioso’s challenge

Andrea Dovizioso was on course for a strong top-six finish until a part of his seating unit broke, forcing him to drop down the order
Andrea Dovizioso described his mood as 'very disappointed' after part of his seat unit broke during Saturday's Dutch MotoGP, forcing him down the order to an eventual twelfth place finish.

The Italian endured a lackluster qualifying after two-straight DNFs in Italy and Barcelona but made solid progress in the opening laps of the 26-lap race.

Involved in a grueling eight-rider battle for fifth, Dovizioso regularly made “f**king scary” moves, to use Cal Crutchlow's words, at the fearsome turns that precede Ramshoek to sit fifth at the end of lap 14.

As Dovizioso had eyes on decimating the two-second gap to team-mate Andrea Iannone in front, vibrations on the front of his GP15 caused by a broken seat component forced him to slow.

“I'm very disappointed about the result at the end,” said Dovizioso, who has scored just four points from a possible 75 since his podium in Le Mans. “My start wasn't so good but I was able to recover some position until fifth. I was quite close to Andrea [Iannone]. Until tht point everything was quite ok.

“I had a problem on the left of the bike. There start a big vibration, a big movement to the front tyre. I thought I had some problem with the tyre. I wasn't able to keep the braking and speed in the middle of the corner, enough to slow down. Lap by lap I slowed down too much until twelfth position.

“I'm very disappointed because after a bad qualifying I was able to make a good result, I mean the best result I was able to do. Our speed was quite ok after the practice. Not enough for the first three riders but enough to finish fourth or fifth. It was an advantage for us but I couldn't get it.”

When asked to give more details on the problem, Dovizioso pinpointed the piece of equipment that attaches the seat to the exhaust as culpable for his problems.

“We broke the rear of the bike. The seat. That created a vibration to the front. I would say the movement become bigger lap by lap. Something broke inside in the middle of the race.”

Having sat as high as second in the series after Jerez, Dovizioso has been powerless to avoid a gradual slide down the standings.

Now fifth, 20 points behind Iannone in third, the 2004 125cc world champion acknowledges Ducati has lost some of the momentum that propelled the Bologna-based outfit to prominece in the Spring of the season.

“If we analyse the situation it looks like they improve a little more than us,” he added. “We didn't improve as much as they do for a few reasons. Maybe the bike but also the fighting of the championship gives the energy to Yamaha to improve a little bit. Also Marquez looks like with the old chassis he become strong again. It looks like that is the situation.”

Another embarrasment for Ducati, dovi bike breaks again... It's a pity the ducatis didn't last long at the front after a promising start of the season they seem to be goibg backwards again. Now they are losing concessions next year, l guess dorna must have realised three dry wins was a bit too optimistic, lol! They better make most of consessions this year and bring the bikes to the front for the second half of the season or else l can see them finishing behind Suzukis next year.
