Jorge Lorenzo hailed his front row qualifying position at the Sachsenring in Germany as 'special'.

The Movistar Yamaha rider is aiming to cut the deficit to team-mate Valentino Rossi at the top of the MotoGP World Championship this weekend.

Lorenzo had closed to within a point of Rossi ahead of round eight at the Dutch TT but the Italian gained a cushion of 10 points after emerging victorious over Marc Marquez, with Lorenzo clinching the final place on the podium.

The double premier class champion has a significant advantage of a front row start on Sunday, with Rossi squeezing onto row two in sixth place.

"It was very important, very special and I feel proud of my lap time because here it is difficult for us compared to the Honda and we struggle so much," said Lorenzo of his qualifying effort.

"I am happy for the qualifying, not the first tyre because I could not make a better lap, but in the second one on the first lap I was close to the perfection I can do.

"First row is very important and I think with a new tyre we have great pace, especially for the first part of the race."

Lorenzo, whose best lap of 1m 20.921s left him 0.585s down on Marquez's pole lap, is wary of at least holding his position into the tight first turn at the Sachsenring, with little opportunity to gain positions in the first sector.

"It gets tighter and tighter when you arrive at the corner so you have to take care of everything and not make any mistakes," he said.

"But I am making good starts this year and I am confident to try to overtake some positions so let's see if I can do it.

"Marc seems to have a better pace than everyone here and I think the pace of Dani [Pedrosa], myself and Valentino is quite similar. But I'm confident to try something tomorrow in the warm-up that can give us a small improvement and be able to be 1'21 during all the race."

Lorenzo is seeking an improvement in the turning of his M1 in the fast corners but has made good progress with the Yamaha in the slower turns.

"The turning in the fast corners is a little bit our weak point now but in the slower corners we are quite good. In the fast ones, we spend too much time on the angle so let's see tomorrow," he said.

"With a new tyre I can able to be faster than before."
