MotoGP Germany: No mercy from Marquez in warm-up

Marc Marquez fastest during warm-up for the German MotoGP at Sachsenring.
Marc Marquez will go into this afternoon's German MotoGP having been fastest in every track session he has contested this weekend.

The reigning champion took his sixth successive Sachsenring pole on Saturday and is on course for a sixth German race win in a row, in the last event before the MotoGP summer break.

Marquez's final preparations saw the Repsol Honda star lead warm-up with a 1m 21.322s lap, while team-mate Dani Pedrosa recovered from a slow start to reach second place, +0.219s.

Yamaha team-mates and title rivals Jorge Lorenzo (0.539s) and Valentino Rossi (+0.689s) were next best, but substantially behind the RCVs, while Cal Crutchlow (+0.734s) and Bradley Smith (+0.791s) put their qualifying woes behind them with competitive fifth and sixth places.

While Marquez has held the upper hand all weekend, Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Rossi had been closely matched as best of the rest for race pace.

The evidence from warm-up still suggests the German GP is Marquez's to lose, having set ten sub-1m 22s laps and an average pace several tenths quicker than anyone else.

Lorenzo and Pedrosa were nearest, with six and five 1m 21s laps respectively and an almost identical average time. However Rossi looked to take a step back, being unable to break the 1m 22.0s barrier this morning.

While Marquez has the pace to claim what would be only his second victory of a roller-coaster season, a poor start at the tight and tough-to-pass circuit is all it takes to put such celebrations in jeopardy.

Pedrosa and Lorenzo will line-up alongside Marquez on the front row, with title leader Rossi in sixth place. The Italian will need to make quick work of passing the Ducatis of Yonny Hernandez and Andrea Iannone, which currently separate him from Lorenzo.

The main decision to be made after warm-up will be whether to race with the medium or new asymmetric front tyre. The asymmetric has softer rubber for the three right-hand turns. Most riders are expected to race the medium rear.

Rossi will start this afternoon's race, round 9 of 18, with a ten point lead over Lorenzo. Marquez is 74 points adrift.
