MotoGP Indianapolis: Lorenzo, Marquez start on top

A late time from Jorge Lorenzo sees him narrowly top MotoGP FP1 from Marc Marquez as the Indianapolis track initially offered very little rear grip
Jorge Lorenzo narrowly pipped Marc Marquez for the fastest time in the first Free Practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Five times a podium finisher at the famous oval, Lorenzo's late time was good enough to earn the top spot by just 0.093s having led the way for the majority of the session.

Marquez, who took some time to get up to speed after apparent problems with his number one machine left him sitting well outside the top ten twenty minutes in, appeared to have grabbed the early initiative. A succession of quick times got him within a tenth of Lorenzo before he went fastest with just over five minutes remaining.

Andrea Dovizioso ended FP1 in third position after a session which saw riders initially lap well over a second off the lap record as the green track initially offered very little rear grip. The Ducati man used the soft rear tyre to set his fastest time, which was initially identical to that of Lorenzo, before the Majorcan upped his pace further.

Marquez in particular could be seen struggling for rear grip through the final corner as he consistently lost time in the fourth sector. The reigning world champion was fastest through sectors two and three but will nonetheless be buoyed to be in the mix around a track at which he has won for the previous five years.

Ensuring all six 'Factory' bikes from Yamaha, Honda and Ducati occupied the first six places, Dani Pedrosa ended the session in fourth, a place ahead of Valentino Rossi.

The best placed Ducati in the past four races, Andrea Iannone finished three places and six tenths of a second behind more experienced team-mate Dovizioso.

Fast early on, Cal Crutchlow eventually slipped to seventh overall and was the fastest of the 'Satellite' entries, a place ahead of Pol Espargaro, fresh from confirming that he will remain with Yamaha and Tech 3 in the MotoGP class for a further season.
