Danilo Petrucci labeled his fifth best time in MotoGP qualifying at Indianapolis 'a great performance' as the Italian missed out on a front row start by just five hundredths of a second.

Fastest in Q1, Petrucci used the softer option rear tyre to good effect to secure his best qualifying performance in the premier class in Q2 but recognises he doesn't have the race pace to run within the top six.

Still, Petrucci is aiming for a top ten finish as he currently attempts to secure a spot in the Pramac Racing Ducati squad for 2016.

"It was a great performance," said the Italian. "I had a great feeling with the new tyre. I complain with the rear grip and also the balance of the bike. This track is pretty strange because I need much load on the front. There is not so much grip on the ground so it is difficult to set up the bike.

"I'm happy because with the new tyre I'm fast and even if our soft and medium tyre are the same compound on the left side. We have only an advantage on the right side. We must have the harder compound for the race. I was happy. I missed the first row only by 0.05s and the race pace for sure is not for fifth position. My target is to be in the top ten as always. But starting from P5 if I don't start bad as always it's a little easier. It's my first second row so it's very, very good."

Asked whether this effort will enhance his chances of staying within the Pramac Racing fold for another year, Petrucci said, "For sure for the next year it will be positive. We are talking for the new year. I hope to be confirmed in Pramac racing and it's my target. We will see what will happen.

I have an option for the next year but it's their choice, it's not my decision. If you look at the classifying I have so many points more than Yonny [Hernandez]. We will see. I don't know but I would be happy to be confirmed here.

I don't know but I think 70-80 percent I will be there. I don't know my team-mate but we will see."
