MotoGP Brno: First 2015 fall as Rossi slips on Pedrosa oil
"Pedrosa had a problem with his bike and it lost some oil and I crashed" - Valentino Rossi.
MotoGP title leader Valentino Rossi suffered his first fall at a 2015 grand prix weekend after being caught out by oil dropped from Dani Pedrosa's Honda during FP2 at Brno.
The incident occurred in the opening ten-minutes of the afternoon session and just moments after Rossi had moved to the top of the timesheets.
“Unfortunately Pedrosa had a problem with his bike and it lost some oil and I crashed,” confirmed Rossi, who fell moments after the Spaniard at Turn 13.
"I feel some smoke from the bike of Dani already from the corner before. But I think it was just a feeling, because usually, don't happen. And also, just me I crashed, because maybe he doesn't lose a lot of oil, but enough to make me slide, but the important thing is that I am OK.
"I hear in the last weeks that Dani will try to give to me some problems, but I hope not in this way!" Rossi joked, referring to comments that a back on form Pedrosa could take points off Rossi in the races.
Pedrosa later revealed the oil was from his front fork and he missed the rest of the session due to pain in his foot.
Rossi meanwhile returned on his spare Yamaha and went on to finish FP2 in fourth place, with a best lap 0.561s behind Marc Marquez.
Marquez's name featured twice on a lengthy list of Friday fallers, as scorching hot temperatures caused slippery afternoon conditions.
“This afternoon was difficult for everybody because the track is very slippery and the amount of grip is very low and at the same time there are a lot of bumps, so every time I entered the corner I was pretty much at the limit,” Rossi explained.
“At the end of the afternoon it went a bit better and I went into fourth position, but I have to recover a disadvantage, especially the one to Jorge, who seems to have the best pace.”
Lorenzo, Rossi's team-mate, set the best time of the day during the cooler morning session, then finished second to Marquez by 0.076s in the afternoon.
"[Jorge] is very good in braking and entry. Is the places where the bike is more difficult to manage. Jorge has started very fast like in Indy, he is in very good shape. And he's already there. He's always very good to use the new tyre, the first lap. So I think for this reason he is in front."
Rossi starts this weekend with a nine point lead over Lorenzo and 56-point advantage over Marquez.
"First of all, my more important advantage over Marc is the points, because Marc is recovering but is quite far," Rossi said of his title rivals. "I have also more points than Jorge, but not a lot.
"They are very fast always, usually in the practice they are faster than me, for sure in the qualifying. But at the same time, this year I am always competitive in the race, and also I am very constant, because I was able always to stay on the podium.
"But is not enough. We need to raise the level a little bit and increase a bit the speed. I cannot just control [the points lead], because Jorge is very close."
